Considering a Tuniq Tower 120

Just wondering if the Tuniq Tower 120 is still recommended these days. Been kind of out of the loop. I DO NOT want to have to "lap" heatsink or CPU. (So I guess the TRUE is out, no?)

Looking at OCing a Q6600 to 3.6Ghz (400x9), with as little voltage as I can get away with. Looking to run 24/7 at that level.

Board is probably going to be this one. Will the Tuniq fit? The northbridge cooler is a tower with heatpipes and fins. One of the newegg reviews says that it's a tight fit with a Tuniq.

I have the X48 LT with a Tuniq and it fits fine, though I have to have the tower oriented so that the fan is facing up, since otherwise it won't fit with the NB cooler.

That board is overkill imo.

I am running Q6600 @ 3.4ghz on DS3L that cost $90. 3.6ghz is only a 6% boost for tripple the price increase. I'd spend the difference on a better graphics card instead.

As far as the cooler goes, Tuniq is a good one, but you can probably pick something up just as good for cheaper now.

1. Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer 4 Heatpipe Heatsink - $40

Review 1: Quad-Core Heatsink Roundup (Note Silverstone NT08 = Contact Freezer).

775 CPU charts - Contact-Freezer - #1

2. Xigmatek HDT-S1283 - $32

I would say both of these are better value than the Tuniq. Thermarlight Ultra 120 is just a bad value proposition nowdays.

The Tuniq is OK for a brute-force device. There are other, more elegant solutions out there now.

I still like this the best because the base is flat and the clamping mechanism is top notch: http://www.svc.com/ultra-120.html

I use this on my Q6600 with MX2 (400 x 9). It keeps me under 65C in 82F ambient (RealTemp) with 1.4685v.

Believe it or not I have a Ultra 120 Extreme that did worse than this because of the convex bas and piss poor clamping mechanism. The Extreme sits atop a 3.6 E6750...what a shame but I had to use what was best for the quad.

I e-mailed Thermalright tech support asking about my observations (actually asked to upgrade to the Ultra 120). They pretty much told me too bad.....the asshats.

I would buy another Ultra 120 in a heartbeat with a Scythe 120mm of course 😉

The Zerotherm NV120 is another nice option. Performance is pretty much within a degree or two of the TRUE but with much better quality control on the base. The downsides is it is going to run you $50 and you can't change the fan out.
