Considering a $200 service plan...

I am seriously thinking of buying a new TV. CC has the one I want and Best Buy will do a price match + 10%.

The TV will cost a little over $800 and they want $200 for a 4-Year Performance Service Plan <$1000 Proj TV for that I am supposed to get:
* Parts and labor coverage
* No deductibles, no hidden charges and no out-of-pocket costs
* No lemon policy
* Normal wear and tear coverage
* Power surge protection
* Preventive maintenance on select items

Since it is a big honking TV, some of these things are for walk-in only and for the bigger things, they will need to send a tech out to service.

But is it really worth it to pay $50 a year for them to come out to my house. And does this really cover everything for 4 years? I've paid for car insurance, homeowners, medical but I've never insured the operation of any equipment before. So all I have is doubts and no real understanding.

EDIT: Just to let other people in on the deal if they want - Circuit City is selling the Hitachi 51" CRT Projection HDTV (51F59) for $799.99. Yeah it is not the BestBuy $699 deal on Black Friday but then again I don'rt have to be in line at 4 AM and I see they are in stock at both places.

It's a tough call... but my experience with Best Buy's policy has been highly favorable. On two occasions, I've had expensive TV's replaced under the PSP (one plasma and one LCD) with no hassles. Had I not had the service plans, I would have been up the creek as the mfr warranties were already up in both cases.

You are in essence buying insurance on your TV. I have bought a couple policies on similar products like digital cameras and in the times I have had to cash them in, they have been worth it. As for a TV, thats hard for me to decide on. Last TV I bought was back in 2000 and that was a nice Sony Wega 32 inch CRT. I didn't get any insurance on it and I haven't needed any in over 6 years of use. It will be the one time you do need it that you don't have it. 😉

What is the standard manufacturer warranty you get on this?

Tough call, but I say at $50 a year to do it.

You can usually get a third-party warranty for stuff like TV's. RossMAN linked to the one he bought for his.

If this is a DLP TV, it would be worth it for the bulb replacements. The one RossMAN linked to last week covered two bulb replacements I think.

Found that thread at AVS Forum about their rebates.

They're priced based on TV type (DLP's are more because of the bulbs) and TV Invoice price. I'm not sure what is meant by TV invoice - if that's MSRP or what you paid.

For DLPs, it's three years in addition to the manufacturers warranty, and three years for the bulb. Two bulb replacements in those three years.

Max you have to find out when the power surge starts is it day 1? Also what is their screen protection, does it mimic the manufacturer's or they do not cover it after its in their warranty aka no dead pixel coverage.
