I'm going to be doing quite a bit of flying in the next few weeks and would like to watch movies on the plane. Would I notice a substantial increase in battery life if I encoded my DVD's to divx and played them from the hdd as opposed to playing DVD's from the DVD drive?

Yes you will notice improved battery life by watching the movies from the HD rather than the optical Drive.

Also... remember to disable the network card, modem, and specially the wireless lan... Set the screen brightness to the least acceptable level.

That ll help in prolonging play time...

Also... for more battery life.... you could underclock your video card . A less drastic option wud be to set your video card to power save mode in the properties...

That is funny cuz i just read an article about this issue and they stated that you will use up just about as much batt runnin from Hdd as u would from DVD Drive.. I can't say 4 sure as i have never tryed this.. So just try it at home before u fly...
