ConservativeSwapfileusage=1 GOOD OR BAD with 256 mb of ram?

Will the ConservativeSwapfileusage=1 command for Win98SE enhance performance or degrade it? Should I have a fixed swap file instead? If so, what is a good minimum size I should set it as?

It would be good for the system with that much RAM. There is no need to set a permanent size for the swap file, especially when you won't hit it that much with 256MB of RAM. All you end up doing is wasting disk space. Just let Windows manage the memory once you have added the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1.

i have been reading about better performances with the CSFU=1 line and letting windows manage the size of the swapfile. personally, i did not see a very significant performance increase. however i would say it probably brings more good than bad. so, why not? :)

CSFU=1 is GOOD! Do it.

While hits to the swap file with 256MB of ram are rare, IMO, I would set the swap file to permanent and go ahead and "waste" the disk space. These days, most users have plenty of room to spare. (not too often I disagree with Andy, he's good), but with that ram I would set it to 100MB min/max on an empty partition so it's contiguous...just my preference. :D

Where is it that I set that? I forgot. And do I need to do that in Windows 2k? I have 256mb ram.

ARGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Will this discussion ever have an end?!

Just let Windows handle the memory. I think the guys over at Redmond know better than any other %$/&§$% why they didn't included it in the System.ini

zippy, yes it is.

amdemall - This is for windows 98 only. Win2k has an excellent memory management system already. It's just a line you add to the system.ini.

Kappo the original media player is on the iwinme nstallation also. Just find mplayer.exe and start it. Go to the options and select all the associations so that this older version will open the media files instead of the new media player 7. That's all.

For what it's worth, on a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro after initial boot up, my system is using 128MB of memory.

Luckily I have 384MB.
