The program, coordinated by the Colorado-based group Focus on the Family and its influential founder, James C. Dobson, would use a variety of methods ? including information inserted in church publications and booths placed outside worship services ? to recruit millions of new voters in 2006 and beyond.

The effort builds on the aggressive courtship of evangelical voters in 2004 by President Bush's reelection campaign, even as the Internal Revenue Service has announced renewed scrutiny of nonprofit organizations, including churches, that engage in political activities.

IRS to the rescue??

The IRS has launched a program to crack down on violators, with investigations pending against dozens of churches.

The IRS probe with the highest profile is that of All Saints Church in Pasadena, one of Southern California's largest and most liberal congregations.

After a priest delivered a sermon critical of the Iraq war two days before the 2004 presidential election, the IRS began reviewing the Episcopal church's tax-exempt status. No decision has been announced.

I guess not. I can't believe a Christian is against war, what a fcker!

"There's just very, very little to show for what has happened," Dobson said on Fox News' "Hannity & Colmes" show at the time, "and I think there's going to be some trouble down the road if they don't get on the ball."

Everything that's wrong with the current GOP in one article. What every happened to the Reagen conservatives?

They have finally come out of their shells to show their true selves. This administration embodies everything that Reagan stood for.....

1. Deficit spending
2. Covert Ops (only the current bunch is doing it on it's own citizenry)
3. Tax breaks for the wealthy
4. Laxing of environmental standards
5. Personal responsibility for everyone....except corporations which no longer have any responsibility to anything other than the bottom line
6. Massive increase in the size of govt.
7. Massive increases in defense spending ratio per GDP
8. String of appointed officials under investigation and some indicted
9. Complete disregard for middle-lower class workers as evident by softening of OSHA rules
10. Star Wars/Missle Defense
11. Disregard for human rights violations that didn't fit into his agenda

Reagan is alive and well and his political views haven't gone anywhere.....unfortunately for the rest of us, neither have his diciples. They have been able to put them into full effect.

Ahhhh...someone who actually remembers the Reagan years. Sadly, I too was sold on Reagan his first term. It only took me one term to realize that "trickle down" economics always ran out of trickle long before it got to me.

The R candidate for Governor in FL is claiming to be a Reagan Republican and mentions how he's a champion of "fiscal responsibility".

I swear it's like the only thing people remember about the 80's is Berlin Wall, Cocaine, Hair Metal.....in that order.

There's plenty of trickle for everyone. Most of us however just get what's warm, yellow, and reeks of ammonia.

Yeah...this lionization of Reagan and the Reagan years is pretty silly...revisionist history at its finest. Bush IS a Reagan conservative, let's be honest here.

You know what kind of Republicans I'd like to see back in the White House? The Teddy Roosevelt conservatives...Reagan conservatives can cram it with walnuts. Sure, the war mongering might be the same, but at least we'd have a conservative leader who busts trusts, stands up for civil liberties and ENCOURAGES criticism of the President.

I love how churches are getting involved in partisan politics. Actually, I have no problem with it, but if they want to do it...pay some damn taxes (no pun intended). Seriously, with all the money we loose from churches we could pay for the war in Iraq they all seem to support. So it works out well for everyone!

People in Churches still have Freedom of Speech just like everyone else. Are Democrats against freedom of Speech?

They are free to speak . . . but they lose their tax exempt status.

What I don't understand is why the moderate Muslims in this pro Taliban church movement in America don't stand up and denounce them like their counterparts in the ME.

Dobson and Focus on the Family are perfect examples of liars, not Christians. Their treachery is their fruit. Ask them what's really going on and they'll spout out the most duped minded prattle you can imagine. This is the industry of Churchianity. They vote for what fills their chest with trinkets tossed to them by the sleaziest scum politicians in American history.

Guess who has been on the telephone all the time the past 6 years chatting up Karl Rove?

Dobson. Falwell. Robertson. etc.

The duping of voters in the USA amounts now to the duping of entire individual Churchs, because of the treachery of these liars who set themselves up as religious leaders.

A true Christian will sense evil. Especially the horrific evil of the current top political leaders. Since when is it a virtue to be completely fooled by the Devil? Or a virtue to dance with him in the pale moonlight?

wow. don't hear you whining about rev. sharpton and jessie blackmail jackon going to speak at plenty of churches defaming the bush admin on a regular basis. if you're going to call to revoke tax exemption status of churches that may lean more to the right, you'd better look to the left. they've been doing this for years...

*sigh*

This comes up every so often.

Churches CAN talk about politics, they can talk about issues, they can be for or against issues- what they can't do it endorse a particular canidate. Even then there are restricts on how much resources can be devoted toward such activity - its around 15% over a two year period (as IRC).

Now people are upset that non-profits are trying to get people registrated to vote? thats kinda sad.....

I would change that to "Why do people on the left automatically assume that there are no liberal or democrat evangelical christians?

And the answer? Because the vast majority of non-Catholic Christians I know are conservative. In fact, I only know one who leans liberal, out of tens or maybe dozens.
