It's politics, it's not a war. In politics you try to convince other citizens what the priorities should be, what needs attention, important issues about freedom and economics. In war you kill people and destroy things. Even a liberal can usually tell the difference.
See Bill O'Reilly, Fox News, and their so-called "Culture Wars".

WTF has the EU got to do with this?

It was an interesting discussion and conservatism exists all over the world, and is faced with the same problems, ie how to remain relevant in a modernising world.

They usually fall back to the "but in 1865" or "OMG youre brown/yellow/a foreigner/a commie what do you know" arguments unfortunately.

I asked, thanks for welshing on a reply.

See Bill O'Reilly, Fox News, and their so-called "Culture Wars".

My favorite examples of the "culture war" tend to be the ridiculous tracts about "real Americans" that crop up a fair amount in the opinion section of the papers and other places (not so much this election cycle, but they're still there). These pieces awkwardly extoll the virtues of the common American for incredibly superficial traits. "We drive F-150s, not compact Volvos. We like NASCAR and football, not skiing and horseback riding. We drink black coffee, not lattes from an expensive coffee shop. We don't know how to taste wine, but we know how to strip and clean a rifle." I'm sure you've all seen that sort of thing before.

The thing about those pieces is that they clearly point to a desire to truly separate the country into two halves. The fact that the dividing line is drawn up in the most moronic manner possible only highlights that it's the division itself that's important, not any particular reason for it.

Edit: I do find it interesting that those pieces are ALWAYS conservative in nature. I've never seen somebody write "We can talk intelligently about different varietals of grape, but have no idea what zone defense is." Every once in a while you'll hear a phrase like "flyover country" disparaging the folks between the coasts, but this particular bit of "culture war" seems to be almost entirely fought by the right.

I don't think it's a war, but it's not just the kind of politics you describe either. There is very little attempt at convincing people compared to the amount of time spent preaching to the choir. And you don't have to listen to commentators very long before it becomes pretty obvious that they really do view people with different views as the enemy. The idea that we're just reasonably debating important issues only lasts until you hear some conservatives hoping San Francisco gets attacked by terrorists because the city is very liberal (and there are liberal examples as well).

This may not be an actual war, but it's not exactly the Lincoln Douglas debate either.

It's not the Hamilton/Burr debate either.

Oh hell no. In fact it is thanks to Obama's presidency that you're seeing a conservative awakening and huge resurgence. Liberals overplayed their hand thinking Americans actually wanted what they were pushing. Let's take a look at the following huge signs:

1) 2010 elections, nuff said there, historic epic election never before seen in terms of shift.
2) Reaction to occupiers - Americans are pretty much disgusted with what they're pushing and overall reaction to their real message (communism)
3) Obama's recent attack on religious liberty. The whitehouse even said they were surprised at the outrage - that right there tells you what obama thinks about religious freedoms

No, Conservatives are pretty damn emboldened and it's thanks all to the liberal/obama showing what they truly believe.

This is what old fogies and hicks actually think.

In the answer to the OP... in 20 years, they will either be dead or senile and progress will again be won.

Republicans undiscover fire;

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/02/12/1063989/-Republicans-undiscover-fire?via=blog_1

Conservatism has moved out of the ranks of political theories and simply become a cult; one that requires that certain phrases be mouthed, that certain hatreds be nourished, and that purity be maintained regardless of cost. That schism with reality is increasingly large and increasingly obvious. They try to paper over that gap by dismissing little things like science, reason, history. Real science fails to support their contentions, so they have to write it off. Reason doesn't work for them, so any question must be met with red-faced indignity — every question a gotcha question. Real history is full of warts, quirks, and unfortunate truths that don't fit their ritualized beliefs. So they have to try to rewrite history, giving us rewrite Reagan who never raised a tax or increased a debt, rewrite FDR who created the issues he actually solved, rewrite Lincoln who championed the Confederate cause, rewrite founding fathers who never owned slaves, never supported government regulation of the economy, never wavered in their ardent love for a form of religiosity that didn't yet exist. Tricorner hats are the new tinfoil.

I know you righties will hate the source.;)

As long as you believe a primary component of conservatism is simply "holding onto the old ways" then yes, conservatives lost "the war" or whatever it is you're talking about. Change is constant and inevitable, so any conservative like that will lose the war virtually every year going back hundreds of years, and will always lose forever.

But that's not my brand of conservatism and I tend to believe that many conservatives don't put a lot of stock into "keeping things the way they used to be." Sure there are certain principles I'd like to "conserve" but that's just an acknowledgment that there have been some pretty solid ideas in the past that merit favorable attention, but I'm not sure how that's much different than most people's views.

I really dont think most liberals give a shit about spidey having a pile of weapons in his basement.

Its a wedge issue to get conservatives out and voting. The best thing the liberals could od would be to concede every point of gun ownership to the conservatives then they would only have to worry about prochoice rights

Unfortunately we have Bloombitch and Brady Bunch shoving money into it, and there is the history of the Assault Weapons Ban and creation of the ATF. Gun control, while perhaps not a number 1 priority, is still very much a point of liberal policy. The NRA would not be what it is today without liberal attacks on gun rights.

That said, if you are ever in a position to change this, please do.

No they usually cant. Many liberals would be perfectly happy if anyone opposed to their views just flat out died.

You know, I'm getting really tired of hearing how Communist Obama is. The Soviet Union died over 20 years ago. "Dem commies r a'cummin!" is no longer a rallying cry. And frankly it's blinding you from what Obama is really about, MONARCHISM!

Just look at the record: more restrictions on companies, Obamacare telling insurers what to do while placating the masses, unchecked illegal immigration, overuse of the wartime powers act, recess appointments all increase his personal power while placating the masses, priming us all for a takeover by King Obama I!

Makes about as much sense as any Conservative Obama-clamor I've heard thus far.

I'm curious because it would seem to me on the great social issues of the day the United States is inching closer and closer towards progressive/liberal social viewpoints.

In 20 years, do you honestly think we'll still be debating issues like gay rights? Do you really think that Conservatives will be able to hold back social progress on these issues? Or do you think it's merely a matter of time before the dam breaks and Conservatives lose again like they did with segregation?

Over 30 votes on allowing homosexuals to mimic marriage have failed. In fact. its lost every time its been voted on. Only judges (like the homosexuals judge in CA) or bought politicians (like in New York) ever succeed in forcing homosexual stuff on the public at large.

When homosexuality starts to impact society its always because society is deteriorating. Since a deteriorating society either collapses or restores itself a correction will not be far off. Its easy to see USA is deteriorating rapidly. As the economy and national well being wane look for people to reawaken to the fact they've been had and led from their better values.

There are also a whole new crop of diseases about to hit the public at large after being greatly accelerated in homosexual populations. There's one HUGE beetch slap coming America's way and then media and lunatic academics wont be able to bamboozle anymore - like with that pile of crap called global warming. Yeah thats over too.

Two thirds of people also want borders closed. A few years ago more people described themselves as pro-life than pro-choice (a first). The social and culture wars only look lopsided because the media is just a re-education tool that skews reality to bamboozle the people.

history teaches us that all societies eventually fail. The us will fail with a well tanned liberal in the white house convinced of his own magnificence and dictating utopian tyranny.
