That would be wrong. We are honoring our past heritage and fore fathers.

I have never heard a Republican say or even imply that slavery wasn't that bad. I will say from my reading on the subject that some slave owners were horrible ( a lot of these were also black ). Some were not bad at all. I do not have any percentages for each however. There were some slaves that lamented that they were forced into freedom.

Then we had the Carpet Baggers that came in a raped everybody.

Just shut up.

House Republican leadership was forced to pull a spending bill from the floor Thursday after an uproar over the Confederate flag threatened to sink the entire measure.

The dramatic move came after Southern Republican lawmakers revolted against a Democratic plan to ban the flag from cemeteries. GOP leaders were already struggling to cobble together enough support to pass an Interior Department spending bill, and the protest by lawmakers over the flag issue likely would have caused the appropriations bill to fail.

“This was an attempt to codify the Obama administration’s own directive to our national cemeteries and it is unfortunate that it has devolved into a political battle. It is our hope that we can have a thoughtful discussion on this matter that is free of politics,” said a GOP leadership aide.

Just as the legislature in South Carolina banished the flag from the grounds of its capitol in Columbia, the debate burst into full view in Washington.

The question at issue was narrow — whether the government should allow Confederate flags in federal cemeteries, and in U.S. park shops — but the politics are, obviously, extremely sensitive for the Republican Party and the House GOP conference. Which is top House Republican leaders, including Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), plan to discuss at a meeting Thursday morning.

The debate over the flag broke out on the House floor during a late-night round of legislative wrangling over an Interior Department spending bill. On Tuesday evening, the House adopted several amendments to banish the confederate flag from federal cemeteries, and prevent the U.S. Park Service from doing business with shops that sell the confederate flag.

So easy a caveman can do it, but apparently not conservative Republicans.

It never ceases to amaze me Republicans cannot resist the urge to lurch towards racism

This is getting to the point of ridiculousness. Having added the Confederate battle flag to the state capital, which the Republican legislature has now removed, the Democrats are now wanting to go so far as to ban the U.S. Park Service from doing business with shops that sell the Confederate flag. Yet it would still be fine for American schools to fly the Mexican flag and the U.S. Park Service could still do business with shops that sell the flags of ISIS and Al Qaeda.

I was all in favor of removing all Confederate flags from flying over any government facility, including monuments, but this is just getting stupid PC.

There are shops that actually sell the flags of ISIS and Al Qaeda? If so, how do you know that they aren't just FBI/CIA sting operations? Talk about painting a target on your back.....

If they wanted to debate its removal that's fine. But previous bills had already arranged for its removal and Republicans tried to bring it back.

Not according to the Politico story, which says that these amendments were passed to codify Obama's directive and then that left the spending bill without sufficient support to pass.

It has been for awhile now and it doesn't look to be getting any better.

And what does the flag on graves have to do with a spending bill? Shouldn't the amendment at least have something to do with the bill they are amending.

Look I need to direct my flag-burning in a more jingoistic direction. You got a better idea?

One would think so, but not in the House. That's where pork comes from - I'll add another Robert Byrd Memorial Building to my spying bill if you'll add my Strom Thurmon Interracial Dance Hall to your milk price subsidy bill. Senate amendments theoretically have to pertain to the bill's substance, but in practicality they do pretty much whatever they wish to do.

Statues of Lenin were in former USSR for decades too. And they have just now been removed in places like Ukraine. Sometimes people procrastinate when taking out the historical trash.

People have been upset for a long time about it. Just now traction can be made and the rednecks are on the defensive. Can't burn a cross on everyone's lawn who protests.

Its really galling that there are memorials to Forrest. Forrest was a murderer, helped get the Klan going and was all around a worthless shitty person. Might as well have a memorial to Hermann Göring.

I think moving the Forrests' graves is beyond stupid, but I do find it disturbing that Tennessee has so many monuments, parks, and statues honoring Nathan Bedford Forrest. While I'm sure he had good traits and did some good things, on balance he was a pretty evil dude, yet he might well have THE highest number of monuments, parks, and statues in his honor across Tennessee of anyone. As a Tennessean, frankly I find that embarrassing.

It seems to me that taking out the trash has three levels, each of which takes a longer duration to reach the point where the imperative to act is triggered.

There's taking out the daily/weekly household trash, then there's cleaning out the closet/garage to make room for other more recent trash and then there's cleaning out the attic where it takes a major motivational occurrence to induce the urge for dragging out all of the stuff that time has rendered useless or of degraded sentimental value.

The South it seems may be in the "clean out the attic" mode, getting rid of things that were stashed long ago but not forgotten. With the changing of the times and attitudes, the clean-out , IMO, makes for a leaner, meaner stronger demographic that's much more flexible and capable of existing and prospering in the present day world.

Nice analogy. Makes me think of cleaning out junk and you find that not only will you never use that Mr. Microphone or Mr. T skull cap, it's kind of embarrassing to find out you still have them.

Wow, that's a lot of respect given a traitor flag on the way down.

That's why it's good to remove these things voluntarily, Confederate supporters, you get to keep some dignity.
