Conroe e63/400 vs AMD x2 4400+

If i have to get the Asrock VSTA motherboard which can barely overclock, would it be better than a AMD x2 4400+ at ~2.7ghz when the e6300 wll be a ~2.1ghz or the e6400 being at ~2.4ghz?

The reason i have to get this motherbaord is because i still have DDR memory and its pretty good and also i have a 6800GT AGP.

I think E6600 at stock frequency beat FX-62 in most benchmarks. Quate from Anandtech's review:

I would pick E6400 and try to run at 2.4Ghz.
 
There is usually a better choice than buying a motherboard with AGP + PCI-E, DDR1 + DDR2, coupled with bad performance and weak overclocking options.

Keep your AMD setup until DX10, at which time Conroe motherboards will be much cheaper.
 
Isn't VSTA's PCI-E port only 4x? That thing blows. I'd stick to an AMD setup, just get a cheap Epox mobo or something and you'll be set.
 
The thing is I still have a old rusty AMD 3200+ @ 2.4ghz and I think i need a upgrade now. This AMD is hosting a game server and i got some money from hosting and i want to upgrade to something for ~$400.

I can get a VSTA + e6400 for ~$380 CAD
or I can get a AMD x2 4400+ with Asrock DUAL SATA (Support AGP) for ~$350

When i need to upgrade my graphics/ram, i can sell the VSTA for like $40-$60. Im not sure if i should get the conroe or the X2.... :/
 
just ditch AGP.. it's not that hard..

IMO anyone spending over $300 on their CPU/mobo combo doesn't need to look at anything but Conroe. In other words.. if your'e even looking at an X2 4200+, you should get the E6300 no questions asked.

That's of course, if he can actually afford to do so. I'd go for a conroe too, if possible but if not then go for a 4200+.
 
I picked up the VSTA as a stop gap measure until I can get my hands on a Shuttle SN37P2. So in the mean time, I'll be using my E6700 with my old ATI 8500DV AIW and OCZ DDR 400 2x512MB. And once I get my XPC rig up and running, pick up a E6300 to use in my cheap $80 (cnd) mobo.

I've stopped looking at conroe because it wont be available in my local retail store until September and i dont think i would even need a CPU when its September since school starts then.

So these are my choices:

AMD x2 3800+ s939 -$179
AMD x2 4200+ s939 -$219
AMD x2 4400+ s939 -$269

Would the x2 4400+ be better because it has double the cache?

Also im getting the ASrock Dual -Sata Mobo just because it supports AGP and its cheap.

Last but not least, which CPU cooler would be the best? Im looking for air cooling only.

I would like a quiet one, or something not too loud.
 
Why are you buing this if youre not even going to need it in a month and by the time you get back to it it will be outdated?
 
Im not actually going to just let this CPU age, im actually going to use it a few hours a day but i just cant wait until September.
 
I just picked up the X2 4400+ ADV4400CDBOX (as opposed to the ADA4400CDBOX). I spent a bit more on the 4400 vs the 4200 mostly because I expect the extra cache will help with the video rendering I do and I thought it had a piped heatsink(could've saved $40-$50 in a better heatsink). Turns out it has EXACTLY the same plain jane heatsink as the 3000+ I pulled from my machine. So now if I want to get past the 2.6Ghz ceiling I'll need to invest in a better cooling solution.

Btw, I picked the 4400+ up from ZipZoomFly last Sunday for $250 and today it is $230 w/free shipping: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80726-1 . Talk about crazy prices falling.

As for why I am replying to this thread. I am taking my old 3000+ and was trying to decide between the Asrock 939 Dual-SATA2 or the new version the Asrock 939 Dual-VSTA . Why the AGP? Well I have previously invested in an AGP based NVidia FX 5200 w/tv tuner which when combined with the recently retired A64 3000+ will make a nice little media pc. Oh and there seem to be a ton of people who vcore & vdimm modded the Asrock 939 Dual-SATA2 mobo for a better OC and I figure it'll be fun to tinker.

So I am wondering eelw, where did you pick up your VSTA or was it not a 939 model?

As for those who recommend against the Asrock, is there another AGP based Skt939 you'd recommend with maybe a bit better (non vcore&vdimm modded) OC track record in the same price range?

Oh and thuganomics what kind of OC you looking for? I have gotten 2.6Ghz+- w/the stock cooler on both my 3000+ AND now my X2 4400+ (in fact I am currently prime 95 stressing it now in 26C ambient and the CPU is at 64C. If you can live with those numbers I'd say just stay with stock and install RightMark clock and SpeedFan to keel it "cool 'n' quiet" when you don't actually need the extra Mhz.

Is this going to be a gaming machine, or a server? Either way, I'd recommend this board, since it has both built-in video that's way better than an FX5200, plus a 16x PCI-E slot: Biostar Tforce 6100 Oh, and it overclocks way higher than that ASrock, unless you volt-mod the ASrock.
