Everyone's talking about the Penryn CPUs which will be available around 20th Jan.

Any idea what happens to the older C2Ds ( Conroe & Allendale ) ? Any price cuts likely ? If the e6750 and e8400 both cost $183 ...

well i know the 2140 went up about $15 since last month with the release of that poe-dunk dual core celeron to take the $50 price slot.

i heard they're phasing out the 6xxx for the 8xxx, since like you said, the 8's are filling the same price brackets. dunno whats going to happen to the 4xxx. the quads will probably stay the same til the 45nm quadcores hit shelves.

One of the amazing things about retail is that the old products continue to be ordered long after being obsoleted. Therefore I would expect no price drop on the older E6xxx CPU's, rather they'll just go OOS in 3-6 months.

Just because everyone on this forum is aware of the imminent release of Wolfdale, 99% of the world is clueless.

Sometimes there are price cuts. Other times, not. Check out the 8x multiplier Conroe chips. We have the following:

E6400 2.13GHz 2MB cache
E6420 2.13GHz 4MB cache
E6750 2.66GHz 4MB cache

They all share the same price point of $183 (quantity) and are all available. Sometimes prices are cut, like the E6600 dropping $100 over the past 1½ years. Sometimes the part just eventually becomes unavailable.

Well if newegg doesn't go any cheaper Ebay will. Theres a guy that has been selling OEM 6550's with the "make an Offer" and hes accepted offers as low as $125 + 10 shipping so if there that much cheaper now i figure they will go down even more

There wont' be offcial price cuts, because Intel is not about to debase their own profit margin just because they pushed out new processors. But the prices on older processors will drop simply because vendors will want to clear out old inventory, or OEM chips previously earmarked for OEM builds. Once everything's done, production will stop and you'll only be able to buy used processors.

Celeron E1xxx will be bottomline priced around $50 per 1k, and that's the reason you're seeing Pentium E2xxx price stabilized over $60. Both will exist for now. The reason Intel revived Pentium branding for dual core is so they can show market that Pentium is old technology, and this way people will look down upon Pentium IV/D and all other Pentium related technology in favor of Core 2 series.

The E4xxx "Conroe-2M, aka Allendale" will terminate, the line ends with E4700 with 13x multiplier. Higher FSB processors will start the E5xxx line. The E6xxx will also terminate as stated previously. The E8xxx will be the new high end dual core.

The entire Intel strategy has shifted somewhat predicated on AMD's inability to take Intel on the high end speed. So now Intel is focusing on lower-mid market segment knowing that's the turf AMD will be fighting on. We'll see E1, E2, E5 and E8, and Q9 pretty much becoming the standard Intel offerings for 2008.

OEM chips are the same as retail minus HSF, correct? That's a helluva deal if so.

The "E" chips might have an early premium due to high demand (and resellers capitalizing on demand). I got an e6750 to tide me over till the fuss dies down. Then I'll probably pick up a cheap quad.

I also noticed that just because Intel releases a new Conroe-based line, doesn't mean prices go down for the previous ones. Funny how all the 8-multiplier chips are the same price with the e6750 being the best overall performer for the money. Of course, the 45nm counterpart will be the same price after the early premium goes away.

Not all of the fabs are made for 45nm.

You also have to remember that the majority of people don't overclock so the 65nm part will be more than enough.

You can expect to see the 65nm C2D until late Q2/early Q3, and my guess is they will not lower the price that much.
