Do components such as hard drives and CD drives plug directly into the PSU, or do the draw their power from the motherboard? If they do get it from the PSU, does it come from a molex connector? How many of these are typical on a mid-range(under $100) PSU?
 
I fear that you don't quite know enough about computers to replace your Power Supply. Although Computers are rather straight-forward and you really have to work to plug things into the wrong spot but it can be done.

That minor disclaimer out of the way.... The Hard Drives and Optical Drives both use Molex Connectors and sometimes the Video Card. I know that My new PSU (around $60 or so I reckon) has 2 SATA Power Connectors, and I think 9 Molex's. That should be sufficient for anything you might want to power.
 
Yes, typically, all drives have 4 pin male recepticles on them which accept the wired female plugs from the PSU. SATA drives have a different recepticle and some PSU's have SATA connectors pre-installed, if not, an adapter is needed. Most of the newer high power PSU's will have more than enough 4 pin molex connectors (6, 8, or so)...Welcome to the forums!
