Would the speed of a CPU have any influance on a connection speed? Same modem and provider, just a differant computer?

No not really but I can think of maybe one case which is highly unlikely for you. More specifics about your situation are needed to make a proper judgement.

No (unless it's supper slow) but the settings in the OS and the telephone lines would

If you are using a winmodem (dialup, usually the cheap PCI modems @ the bargain bin), then a faster CPU (to an extent) will increase the performance and reliability of the modem. From my experiences years ago when I gamed on a winmodem and AOL (LOL!). I had a P2 400 and when I upgraded to a P3 933, not only did my FPS increase, but my ping lowered and I disconnected less often.

Its dependant on how the computer is being used. If you are really pushing a lot of activity on the PCI bus where the network card is connected, that may limit your connection speed.

All things being equal, and just the processor speed being different, then I would have to say a resounding no, it will not affect your speed.

(this assessment is not applicable to 8088 era processors) ;)
