Connection Question

Hi Everyone,

I have two wireless PCs but the transfer rate is too slow. I was to connect my PC to my laptop via ethernet. I know I need to use a network cable but which cable (crossover, or straight). Will it work with any cat cable?

can I use a straight through cable instead for transferring file between two PCs? I have lots of straight cables...no crossover

Only if they are gigabit ethernet cards can you use a straight patch cable. Otherwise you'll need a crossover or a switch.

I think some NICs have a auto-crossover functionality (all 1000 Base-T cards do) so you could try a normal patch cable. You should get a green link light if it is working.

Ok I bought the crossover cable. How do I transfer files between the computers? Both comps are running XP

assign a static ip address to both PC's located on the same subnet (ie 192.168.100.1 and 192.168.100.2).

then, just connect using the unc path to the shared directory / folder of the opposite pc. example: \\192.168.100.2\c$

Is setting a share on a folder bad because other people on the network could hack into my computer?
