Connection problems....Were sorry, the number cannot be completed as dialed.

Ok, I just setup a pc for a friend, its a clean install of WinMe & I added a new modem.

Everything went fine, I checked the modem connection at my house when I set it up.
I made a new connection using my settings & connected to the web & surfed & all that to check
that everything was working ok.

Then I deleted the new connection I made in DUN, & gave the pc back, figuring he would use the
INTERNET CONNECTION WIZARD icon on the desktop to setup his connection.

Well, it turns out hes trying to install AOL, which I know NOTHING about, but he says when it dials the 1800 number to find a local number, he can hear the modem dial, then he can hear, "were sorry but the number cannot be completed as dialed".

Now his area code is the same, & I didnt change anything else, & the modem passes diagnostics & definately IS dialing & working properly.

I had him add/remove/add the modem again & add/remove/add all the communications(DUN) under the winme setup add/remove tab.

Modem still passes diagnostics & dials fine, but he still gets the "number cannot be completed as dialed" message.

Any ideas? Other than SCREW AOL. 😉
Its tough to diagnose this stuff over the phone.

is the modem by any chance set up to disable call waiting? my girlfriend's parents had theirs set to disable call waiting (dialing *70 before the actual number to be dialed), and when they went to sign up for Earthlink internet it did the same thing (needed to call an 800 number).

might want to check on that.

I'll have to find out if he changed that setting, I know i didnt.

Thanks for the info.

I hope thats it cuz Im clueless on this one.

you might want to also make sure the "dial as long distance" box isn't checked...not sure if this affects 800 numbers, but it might be attempting to dial the area code and then the 1-800 number.

good to check just to rule out this possibility 🙂

Great suggestion, thats one of the 1st things we checked & I thought it was gonna be it.

Not the problem though, but thanks for the info & bump.

Wish I could get ahold of him & check that call waiting.
Hopefully he'll be home soon.

Anyone else got suggestions while I Wait?

Id like to have as many things as possible to try when we look at it again & hopefully we'll get it figured out.

I cant believe doing an add/remove REBOOT add/remove of DUN settings in the WinMe setup tab under add/remove didnt fix it.
As this should have loaded him with the windows default DUN settings.
