whenever there are lots of open connections (I'm not sure if it's the number of total open connections or the rate at which new connections are being made), my connection seems to die.

any site with a hostname that I visited recently works just fine. if I was on wikipedia I can stay on wikipedia, but I wouldn't be able to go to say cnn.com

I've tried repairing the connection, tried multiple NICs, tried rebooting the modem, plugging the cable into another pc (connection works fine then)

there are only two ways it ever gets fixed

1) randomly. sometimes it takes five minutes sometimes it takes hours and hours

2) a reboot of the OS

but it happens so frequently that rebooting is getting to be a real pain.

I had this problem on xp AND vista.

Try rebooting your router if your on a home network. If your on a office network its most likely a proxy server issue and you should contact IT.

What is the makeup of the Network/Connection?

Is it one computer issue or a Network?

I.e. at the time that this happens other computer, keep surfing normally?

Cause if it is one computer problem, and it happens with both XP and Vista and different NICs, then there other hardware problem in this computer.

rebooting fixes it but I can't keep rebooting everytime this happens since it happens so often.

it's either a hardware or software problem with this computer. I'm doubting it's hardware since I've tried multiple NICs. what other hardware could do that?
