My desktop computer has been having connection problems as of late to an Apple Airport Express, and I've been running out of options trying to trouble shoot this problem before I give up. Most of the problems get encountered when I'm trying to play World of Warcraft or downloading something over Steam. The other computers in the house don't have a problem connecting to the Airport Express.
I've tried 4 different wireless adapters:
An internal PCI adapter: D-Link DWA-552. This one gets rather poor signal from where my PC is placed, but I've had other problems with it. It doesn't get very high speeds on speedtest.
A USB Netgear EVAW111: I run a 10 foot usb cable to my computer, and place it near the door. There it'll get all 5 bars, and hit close to the 30 Mbps speeds its supposed to get. However, it starts disconnecting after a while, and the only way to resolve this issue is to unplug and plug it back in again. Seems to get hot as well. May have possible issues with 64 bit Win 7.
An Older version of Netgear EVAW111. Had trouble working right after I plugged it in. Works fine on my brother's desktop 10 feet away.
A new linksys AE2500 (usb adapter with the 10 foot cable or plugged into my front usb ports). Supports windows 7. Gets less than stellar signal strength. Sometimes lags a lil bit. Doesn't get the 30 Mbps it should. If I'm gaming it seems to overheat, but I've also tried putting zip locks bags of Ice around it. It'll still disconnect.
I've updated all my drivers. Flashed my Bios. I only have 1 driver active at a time (I disable the others). I've had my laptop out two feet away from my desktop and remain rock solid 5 bars (Dell XPS 1530 about 3 years old now). I can't tell if there some unseen software conflict, or all my hardware is messing up. Also have an Xbox 360 within the room that has no problems gaming on a wireless setup. One of my friends suggested that it might be my south bridge over heating, but I don't know how to check that. However, I haven't had any trouble with my other usb devices. So I'm not sure its the south bridge.
Any help would be appreciated before I have to start doing dry wall work to run Ethernet cables around the house if that is the only solution to my connection woes. Hopefully this is in the right sub forum.
