First let me say that this could be considered a motherboard issue as the network adaptor is onboard my P5N32-E SLI. Dual gigbit lan, in fact. and XP32, no service packs or updates as i can't get connected. So if anyone thinks this should go to the MB forum please let me know.

Device manager shows a single 1394 net adaptor, and says its working. If i check properties and activate the icon in the task bar, it claims a 400 Mbps connection, which can't be right. its only a 10/100 router. This machine i am currently using is an Asus gigabit onboard single lan and it reports 100Mbps, and works fine.

If i unintall the adapter it reinstall without a hitch, but works no better, If i reboot with the net cable disconnected and then hook it up, it will acknowlege the connection. if i then unplug the cable, it doesnt show the disconnect. It continues to show connected. its all very strange!

I have downloaded lastest drivers from asus support but they won't install even manually, windows keeps rejecting them as not better than the ones it is already using.

Also, regarding lights. first, if anyone has a good website that explains lan lights i'd be interested. This gigabit machine i'm on now shows 2 orange lights. my 10/100 machines show green and yellow, and the one that won't connect shows orange and yellow, so gooo figure!?!?

so, no internet, obviously, and in fact, can't even whistle up the router ip. it lights the light on the router when i plug in and it goes back out when i unplug. i can plug same wire into another machine (10/100) and it connects right up np, so the wire is fine.

Soooooo, anybody got any thoughts on this, I'd be most grateful!

happy holidays all!

1394 net adaptor is firewire, not your NIC.

is your NIC listed in device manager? try completely uninstalling and trying from scratch. you also may want to try an older driver version.

well that is interesting... but if i boot my machine with no network cable plugged in, and then plug in the cable, up pops the connection icon saying i have a 400Mbps connection on . it is also listed in network connections. so i assumed... but thats not good either. on this machine that in addition to two 1394 connections i also have a lan connection. clearly this is my issue. i have a number of pci bridge devices, and pci devices, and something called sm bus controller all looking for drivers, i will paw thru some of those and see if they like my lan driver downloads. thanks for the heads up!

Gentlemen, you were both right, and problem solved. Nothing on the Asus installation cd worked or installed properly, but downloading from their website and installing, starting with chipset drivers, has everything working. Thanks to you both and happy watever holidays you celebrate... zz03
