connection lost every time a pc turned on or turned off on the network

I'm using a PC with WinXP as a router that has several other home comps attached to it in star. Problem is that every time a computer (other than the router comp, obviously) on the network turned on or off, the dialup connection drops. On demand the connection comes back online. I'm aware of the option "Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection" but that's been set to disabled (unchecked). I've even tried to set up the connection again because I thought the registry entry that's set when checking that option is not saved properly. No effect, problem persists. It's extremely annoying, since family members turn their comps on and off regularly and my ... err... important downloads suffer.

Any ideas?
