Connection dropping often but infrequently

My modem recently started dropping connection at least once a day beginning about 3 weeks ago. If I unplug then plug it back in it will reconnect just fine. Is there any test to determine if this is a modem problem before calling up Comcast (or buying a new modem)

Fyi, I have a wrt54g connected to a motorola sb5001 (I think that's the number). Both are pretty dang old (4-5 years).

Often but infrequently??? It's like saying that chick is hot but ugly...

Anyways, how are you connected to the router? Wired or wireless? Also, try temporarily going straight through into the modem to rule out issues with the router. Be sure to enable a software firewall so you're not totally exposed when directly connected.

Yah the router is wireless. The modem is what is dropping (lights that should be solid start blinking). I only mentioned the router in case it could cause a modem to lose connection. All computers on the network (wired or wireless) lose connection.

If it is the Modem losing the connection than your ISP's Tech Support is your friend.

Agreed. You can try replacing the coax cable that goes into your modem (if it's not a direct run from the outside or a long run not easily replaceable) to see if that helps.

Thanks. Ill give them a call later. By the way, just for general knowledge purposes, does this type of activity happen to dying modems or do they basically just not turn on anymore?

It is a common behavior when the Modem starts to die.

BTW, if the ISP would give you the Comedy Song and Dance Show called "Our computer does not show that there is any trouble", insist that they would send someone to your home to check the signal on your side.

This Tech. guys usually come with a modem in is back and if it is the modem he would replace it on the spot.

I just had similar symptoms recently. The connection speed would start out at the normal 2-3 mbps (using CNET's bandwidth test), and trail off to 200-300 kbps within 15 minutes or so. After an hour or two of use, we'd start to see short, 2-3 second disconnects randomly every few minutes. Our router randomly stopped working at the same time, so I replaced that first, and blamed (what I thought were) the new problems on the new router.

I finally got sick of it tonight, went out, and bought a new cable modem. I grabbed one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16825115030 and so far the connection speed hasn't dropped at all. We've had it connected for several hours now.

You guys don't keep a spare cable modem in your computer parts closet?

Oh, the horror! 😛

OP, have you went to your modem's internal webpage and checked on the signal levels? Curious to see if you have at least a decent signal or not.

I'll try to check that out tomorrow. The awesome thing about it is that I haven't lost connection since I posted this thread... AT effect?
