I am trying to connect a CD-ROM into my computer using the ide2 connection from the motherboard.

The jumper is set to master and i have set the bios to auto on the secondary master. When i boot the PC the screen tells me that it can see the CD-ROM but when i get into Windows i cannot see D drive.

I tried the CD-ROM as a primary slave, switching the jumpers and configuring the bios and then the CD-ROM worked ok.

I think that may be the ide2 connection on my motheboard is buggered. I tried a different ide cable that i knew worked but still no joy.

Any ideas ?

If i do use my CD-ROM on the primary slave will the performance of my system be affected ?

Thanks

Anytime you use a cdrom on an ide port, you should always set your bios to "None".
The Auto and Hard drive settings for size are really only good for hard drives. I would just go back to the bios and set it to none and have your jumpers on the drive(cdrom) set to whatever you want. Ie. Secondary master for instance, and it should work fine. Good luck.

How you set up your ide devices does make a difference. How many cdroms/cdr/cdrw/dvds and hard drives do you have in your system?

If you have two hard drives and 2 cd devices, I would lay them out like this.

Primary master - boot hard drive
Primary slave - dvd
Secondary master - cdrw/cd
Secondary slave - hard drive

This setup works well for me, it might be different for you but it's not a bad general system setup.

If you use your cdrom on your primary slave, it will suffer a bit of performance if you are using this as the main cdrom. Ie. If you play a game from here which works off the cd and primary hard drive, then you will lose a bit of speed. If you use your cdrom for ripping audio to the hard drive, again it will suffer a bit. It will still work, just not as well as separating the cdrom to another channel.
