Connecting Xbox360/PS3 to a CRT monitor?

Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are said to have DVI outputs and all games in at least high definition 720p (I heard for the Xbox at least). If I have a CRT capable of 1280x720, then could I just use a DVI->VGA dongle and use my CRT? How would the quality be?

The picture would likely be squished unless your monitor detects a widescreen resolution and automatically puts in bars at the top and bottom, or is widescreen.

You can just use the calibration buttons and a tape measure to make it 16:9 I've done this with the 720p videos on the Microsoft site and it works fine.

Now what about the image quality from one of the consoles?

I find it unlikely they would have DVI-I -- probably just DVI-D, as they are designed for use with HDTVs.

But assuming you get an LCD monitor or HDTV, it would look like any other HD 720p source? What else would it look like?

Nobody knows definitively how the game graphics will look. Rough indications are that they'll be better than today's best PC video cards by a decent amount, but beyond that it's pretty tough to gauge.

I was concerned because of using the analog VGA connection. I don't know if it would degrade the signal quality or something, I'm stupid.. Anyways you're saying I won't be able to use the consoles with my monitor? Please don't suggest that I go out and buy a brand new LCD or HD television.

Whats the differance between DVI-I and DVI-D?

DVI-D is a digital only connection.

DVI-I is the same as DVI-D, but includes 4 extra pins to allow an analogue signal as well.
