Do I just need vga cables/box? Are there any dvi connection cables?

I am trying to connect the xbox to a Dell 1901 FP.

IIRC the 360 has DVI output, and if this is an UltraSharp Dell, it should have DVI input. I'd go with that.

Female stereo to male 3.5mm adapter. I would get that. Connect the 3.5mm in to the AUX input on the back of your soundcard or sound inputs. That should do the trick.... I believe. Unless you have a soundcard like the X-Meridian, etc. that supports optical input. Then you just link the optical cable to it.

360 has no digital outputs at the moment (ALA DVI or HDMI) so VGA is really the only option.

not sure what Microsoft was thinking

That's not a good option IMO as he would have to have his computer on

I was thinking more on the lines of connecting the audio cables to speakers.

The 360's connector from the back of the system is purely analiog. They are rumored to have an HDMI cable in the works, but no confirmation.
