Connecting VCR to computer

I am connecting my VCR to my computer to pull off some audio to make an mp3 file. I have it hooked up ok. When I play the tape the auido comes through the speaker. But when I try to record and turn the record level all the way up, the signal does not seem strong enough to record. Any suggestions for software or anything at all? I am using a program called cdwave. I had succes making mp3s of cassettes with the program.

Have you tried hooking your VCR up to an amp and then going from the amp into your sound card. That way you'll be able to adjust your volume.

you probably checked this, but are you sure you have adequate volume under Windows volume control on recording?

Go to Volume.
Options->Properties, Select Recording.
Depending on the card, I guess, there should be an assortment of checkboxes. Make sure that you choose your recording port and increase the volume. (Or check and increase all of them if you don't know which you're recording from.) My volume control here has one for TV Tuner Audio. The one I use at my other job gets audio from Line-In.
