Connecting VCR to cable box and recording

I'm trying to record with my VCR, but it's not working. I connected the wall outlet coax cable to the cable box (DCT 2244). Then I connected the cable box to the VCR and the VCR to the TV.

I can view the tapes, just not record. Any help?

How old is the VCR? I ask because most newer VCRs (2000-Present) fillow the Copy protection plan also known as Macrovision . Does the OSD give any errors? or what does the machine actually do when you press the record button?
and the hookup should be this way Cable from the wall to the DCT box - Out from the DCT to cable in on the VCR and the out to tv to the TV set

You can still record with macrovision, it will just go from dark to light and back and forth as it messes with the AGC . Should still be able to record though.

I just figured out I can only record the channel that the cable box is set to. I need a splitter to record and watch different channels, which sucks cause then I won't be able to record some channels. Curse you technology.
