Connecting two routers together?

I currently have an SMC7004ABR router (has 4-port switch & print server). I'm wondering if I can buy another router/switch/printserver combo unit like this (or the D-Link Di-704P) to have a second print server. I wouldn't be using any of the firewall or routing capabilities of the second one, only the printserver and switch. There are some sales going on, and if you include rebates, its much cheaper to buy a second router/switch/printserver than it is to buy a print server alone.

Sure you can. Just use the uplink port or a crossover cable to two regular ports on the two switches if there are not uplink ports.

Just make sure if you use the DHCP capabilities of the router(s) you only have DHCP service running on one router not both routers or your clients will begin to get DHCP requests that redirect them to the wrong router as a default gateway.

Mattm, no need for a second router, if you have an extra port on your hub\router and I assume you do. Then by a "pocket size print server" I sell em all the time, and they work grrrrreat. In fact D-Link makes one it just fits over the centronics conn. on the back of your printer and has a RJ45 (ethernet) connection on the other. Dont waste your hard earned $$$ on another router......

I plan on doing this. I expect to disable DHCP and not use the uplink port. Just use it as a switch.

Of course if my brother in law wasn't sending me his SMC baracade for free I wouldn't be doing this. You should be able to get a single port print server for $50. Of course if you need another switch you might as well buy another router.

(That and I've seen the barricade for $60 online sometimes.)
