connecting two pc's with a hub???

i was wondering if i could set up two computer for file sharring (since my area still doesnt offer cable modem service!!!) without having an internet connection. so if i through a nic card in each and then link them together through the hub, will it work??? what do i need to put in for the card configurations, do they need the same gateway???, what about IP addresses??? subnet mask??? and will this allow me to play games like UT across this "network"
 
1 nic for each machine..2 total
1 straight thru cat5 cable for each..2 total

Don't put anything in gateway field
assign ip addy for each machine..
put subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on each
put them in the same workgroup
put in the correct protocols..tcp/ip, etc
