Well I've had to return 2 routers and am about to return the third to best buy because I either can't get a connection at all with my Xbox 360 or it drops the connection randomly. I'm at the point were I just want to say ****** it and use a direct connection all the time but with my new desk arrangement I can't do that anymore.

Now my new motherboard ( ASUS P5W ) has two ethernet ports can I connect the PC via one port then have a cable comming out the other one to the 360? Would that connection work?

If I can get that too work do you think I'll loose a lot of speed?

To be honest if you're having problems getting three routers to work I don't think directly connecting everything will be any easier for you. Hooking computers together will require crossover cables, static IP's in each unit, along with whatever an Xbox needs. Are you planning on running a firewall on your computer if you still want to go this route? With the above, you could use XP Internet Connection Sharing but a software firewall is recommended. I would advise going back to the router stage and purchasing a good, Xbox recommended router and learn how to run it. Cheaper routers or generic ones aren't always the best most solid solution.

Yeah, there is no reason a router shouldn't work for you, and would be the easiest and most convenient drop-in solution. The question is: what router(s) have you been using? I use Linksys WRT54GS, as do many people, and have no problems with it. Otherwise to connect it through your desktop pc, you'll have to do all the stuff bluestrobe said.
