Connecting two computers without a switch/hub

My buddy asked me how he could do this and I know there's an adapter that allows you to directly connect two computers but can't remember what it's called. Any help would be appreaciated.

Two computers can be directly connected with CrossOver CAT5 cable if they have Network Cards (NIC) inside.

You can find this cable in you local CompUSA.

Two computers can be directly connected with a special USB Network connector if there is no NIC inside.
