Connecting to mDP monitor using DP on computer

I bought a cable with mDP on one end and DP on the other, expecting it to work. It doesn't. The port on the computer works - a regular DP to DP cable works fine.

So, 3 possibilities, 1) the cable is broken, 2) the mDP on the monitor is broken, 3) the cable isn't omni directional and I need a different one.

Cable I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00C7RM2TG/ref=sxts1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474986841&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00C...1474986841&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65

edit: per reviews, the cable should work at this

I believe the mDP end on that specific cable is meant for the graphics card output (cable input)... meaning it is backwards.

"Convenient cable for directly connecting a Mini DisplayPort (Mini DP or mDP)/Thunderbolt™ 2 port compatible computer to a monitor or projector with DisplayPort"

Also make sure that your monitor mini DP is an input and not a clone or daisy chain port

that's kinda my thinking but it's the same 20 pins on each side and afaik there's no electronics/converters inside it like a DP out to HDMI in would have.

guess i'll see if i can find one that specifies things the other way around (although the length is an issue)

it's selectable as an input in the menu so i don't think that's an issue.

edit: reading through the reviews someone has used a DP source to an mDP iMac as the monitor, so the cable should be able to do it.

The mDP on the iMac is a TB2 port though, no?

I have basically the same cable in a box here somewhere; I will try it with my XR341 as soon as I find it and post the result.

Tried regular DP 1.2 output on my R9 290x and mDP into the UHD monitor and it worked fine... despite mDP being listed as the "source" input on the cable... idk
