Connecting to comcast cable

Just did a fresh install of Windows XP on a friends computer. Everything is fine, except I can't connect back to the internet. I'm not too familar with cable internet so I need help. The ISP is Comcast and the modem has both a usb + nic. I'm using the NIC and it seems as if I'm connected through the NIC just fine. But the connection is limited. I Can't view any websites.

I was wondering, does Cable internet need a User/PW like DSL?
what about the MAC address?

basically I jsut want to get this up and running. and any walkthrough would help. I would want to avoid the "self-installation program" they provide. Is there any way to do this manually?

See if you can PING the outside world.
Go into command prompt and type: ping www.bbc.co.uk
If you get a timeout, then no luck.

You say the connection is limited - please give more details

in Connection Networks

the Local Area Connection is connected through my NIC.

the Status : Connection

however, there is no activity either SENT nor Recieved.
I manually assigned the IP/Subnet/gateway as it was before.

Now, after googling a bit, I'm thinking about doing a " netsh int ip reset [log_file_name] " http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357&Product=winxp

any suggestions? all help is appreciated thx.

Got the internet running.

1. Restarted the IP

2. Then restarted the modem

...and everything is up and running. thank for all the help.

For future reference ALWAYS restart the modem whenever you have a problem getting on the Internet and ESPECIALLY if you change the device the modem is connected to. Cable modems "lock" to the specific MAC address of the device they are first connected to. If you then connect it to another device with a different MAC address (like, for instance, if you decide to connect it to a router later) you have to power cycle the modem or it won't "talk" to the new device.
