Connecting to a Wifi hotspot 1460 feet away...

I've got a Linksys WRT54G Version 2 with the stock antennas on it. It works great throughout my house and in my neighborhood....I've got a neighbor down the block that is wanting to connect to my WAP ~1500 feet away. Is this possible with a home-made directional antenna?

I'm running DD-WRT and can boost my strength to 100% and whatever else I need to do for tuning. Since we'd be attempting to do a line of sight connection down the street, I can setup an antenna on my roof or something.

Thanks.

It probably is within realm of home made antennas. But remember traffic is two way and he needs a good antenna as well. An antenna properly grounded will work well on the roof *cue frankenstein movie*. Just be careful with that signal boosting, I've overheated my radios on many a router turning it to the max.

Your Going to have to look at something with a little more juice probably.
we have a hotspot with a 600MW card on it and a 9DB Sector on a water tower, And i can connect to it with my laptop 1.25 Miles away, thats with LOS though.

Does anyone know how the Linksys WRT54G's work with their 2 antennas. DD-WRT shows that their configured for auto, but can be set to send/receive.

Does auto mean they do both? Just wondering if I'll need to get 2 larger antennas to mkae this work.

DD-WRT let you play with the Antenna settings.

With total clear line of sight and High dbi direction Antennae looking eye to eye on both APs it should work.

Before you even start use on both sites a laptop with Netstumbler to make sure that there is clean noise free channel that can be used.

(Well, I would try this in a line of sight situation before spending money on something else)! 🙂
The problem is I don't have line of sight unless I'm on my roof. I'm thinking about building a wifi antenna with PVC & a mounting bracket...I just have to buy the equipment and find a RP-TNC connector...not sure if they sell those at Radio Shack or Shields, but I'll be calling today.

Sorry, I read too fast (again) and missed the roof part. You could get an extension antenna and add this to it (make this out of thin plastic sheet with aluminum foil covering it) and then point it at your destination just to get a feel if it works. Regardless, good luck.

🙂
