I have two standing speakers that I'd like to connect to the TV without a receiver. The speakers take standard speaker wire and the audio out on the TV requires RCA plugs. How would I go about connecting them? Is it even possible?

If it is possible I know it won't sound amazing, I just figured it'd be a little better than the standard TV speaker. Maybe not.

Unless it actually has speaker wire terminals, no. However, yes, even two decently constructed bookshelf speakers will sound better. I remember when speakers used to be a major selling point and manufacturers actually put decent speakers in sets. Now if you get speakers with any real kind of surround on the edge of them you paid big money.

You need some amplification between the TV and the speakers.

 Even a cheap amplifier with passable speakers will be an improvement over built-in TV speakers.

You don't need speaker wire terminals. You could take the TV apart and bring out the wires directly from the speakers. Or as the OP noted - he has RCA jacks labeled "audio OUT".

This is why people buy receivers and connect good speakers to it.

two standing speakers

Those are going to need amplification - why not put a receiver there as intended?

If you do splice some male RCA jacks and connect them to those 2 standing speakers - the audio output will be so low as to be inaudible. You will probably need to put your ear directly on the speaker to hear anything.

Worst. Idea. Ever.

OP -- either get a real AVR or buy the $40 T-amp and call it a day.
