Connecting PS3 sound to my computer

Hi everyone. I've searched this forum and I've found some answers to this question, but I have one idea that I was wondering would work. So here is the question:

I want to connect my PS3 to my computer monitor via HDMI. Now my sound system, a Logitech Z-5300, does not have component nor optical input capability. My computer sound cards only has optical OUT capability. So this rules out any direct connection of my PS3 sound to my computer system.

Now I was thinking, if I get a Female RCA to 3.5mm converter (a 'Y' cable), couldn't I just connect the components of my PS3 to the female heads of the cable, and then connect the 3.5mm jack to my "Line-In" on my computer?

Now if this works, how can I activate my line in? Will it utilize my entire surround sound system or only the two stereo speakers?

Thanks alot in advance.

The PS3 doesn't have multichannel analog outs, only two-channel (stereo) as part of its component connector. You could connect the left and right channels of this directly to your Logitech's L and R inputs if you like. Of course, whether you do this or run it through the computer, you will only get stereo (or fake surround).

If you want real surround sound, you have to get something to decode the digital audio signals from optical or HDMI -- in other words, a surround receiver or pre-pro. If it's a receiver, it must be one with line-level pre-outs, to which you can connect the analog inputs of your Logitech (which you'd be using as a set of active speakers). Of course, that will be expensive...

I have my PS3 set up similarly. Just go into audio settings on the PS3 and select the analog out. Voila, HDMI video analog audio.

Of course, like s44 said, you're only going to get 2 channel stereo out.
