I'm using a WIN XP system and a D-Link 604 router. Verizon Fios provided a free 604 router a few years back when I signed up with them. Never had a problem with the router. I recently switched to Cable and am trying to use the Dlink 604 router but to no avail. After trying to log into the web-based configuration by typing in the IP address of the router (default:192.168.0.1) into the web browser, I am getting an error seemingly indicating that the password is incorrect (attempted ADMIN & left password blank as per D-Link site. I've also tried to reset the router using the reset switch in the rear on the router (didn't work). Is this router permanently linked to FIOS and unusable for cable? Thanks for any help.

Can you post the exact error message the router is giving you? If you can see the admin web page on the internal LAN address as reported, then the LAN-facing stuff would seem to be working properly. If you can't log in then that's just an authentication problem. It might be that the version Verizon provided doesn't have the same default password as the OEM versions. I don't know.

As for the router working with cable, if it's just a router/firewall and not integrated with whatever terminal device (as in cable modem) FIOS uses, then it should work fine, as it just expects to have a WAN connection and be able to reach a DHCP server at your ISP.

I can't see any error messages besides the error screen indicating that the password is incorrect. I would have thought that the reset button would cause the password to be reset also.

Yes, but because the router was sold through a VAR (Verizon in this case) it may be that the firmware isn't exactly the same, and the password might not default to what is listed on the DLink website.

Why don't you try calling Verizon and see if they can tell you what the default password and account name are?

Thanks for the help. A friend suggested I try to use the password "password" and it worked. The router now works with cable now! Thanks again for the help.
