I'm trying to connect my pc to my sony 42" and I'm getting a lot of discoloration and horizontal lines. I assume it's a refresh rate problem but I've tried all types of combos with no luck whatsoever.

It's my first time doing this but I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. I have a 50ft analog cable but I don't think the long run would pose a problem... any ideas from anybody would be greatly appreciated.

Sure... I have an X800xl connected to a SOney KDF-E42A10 42" Grand Wega through a 50ft SVGA cable. Hope it helps.

50ft is pretty long for a VGA cable and may cause distortion. Have you tried hooking up the PC with a shorter cable? Usually VGA is good up to 10 meters (30ft).

Look here for info: VGA / DVI Info

"VGA-Analogue is not going to have as long a range. Using high quality cables I would say that 10 meters would be the maximum for 1024x768@60Hz. There are VGA-Analogue repeater solutions as well that can also permit 10's and 100's of meters of signal--at lower resolutions--e.g. 800x600@60Hz. "

What resolution are you trying to output to the TV? 1280x720 should work as well as 1024x768 and both should be at 60hz.

If all else fails try looking over at AVS Forums and do a search for your model of TV: AVS

Yep it's definitely the cable... I noticed a buzzing and looked at my regular cable channel and saw a horizontal striping, so I unplugged the VGA cable and the buzzing disappeared along with the striping issue. So, I'll pick up another (hopefully better quaity) cable and test it out. The one I got came from monoprice. Thanks for the help.

Ok I went and got a 25 footer and I'm still a problem. It's about half as bad as before but you can still see the flickering and striping, what gives? What about a signal booster or repeater? Any ideas where to get one for a reasonable price?

Any other ideas??? Why is this happening?

25ft may be too long if the cable isn't a good quality one. Have you tried hooking up the computer directly to the TV with a shorter (6ft) cable?

There are also settings to adjust phase and pitch for the TV if you have noise / flickering (page 71 -- pitch gets rid of unwanted stripes):

Yep I tried a 6ft VGA cable and it worked very well, but I need to make a run work around 50ft and I'm having a very hard time. I even got a VGA multiplier but it seemed to have no effect... could it be the multiplier was defective? I even tried a long 50ft DVI to VGA cord but it didn't work that great either. I was thinking of getting a long DVI to HDMI cable but I don't think that will hold up either...

I'm running out of options here... any other suggestions? I never thought this would be that tough.

I think the analog nature of VGA may be the problem, although I'm not an expert in that area so I could be totally wrong. Are you running it along areas that could introduce lots of interference?

I'm using a 25ft DVI/HDMI cable from monoprice from my PC to LCD TV and have no issues at all. People on AVSforum have had success with the 50ft version too. I think DVI/HDMI would be your best bet if you can do that.

Yes, I hooked up a 6 ft DVI and the picture on my LCD TV blew me away! I'll definitely get a longer cable and hopefully that will fix my problem.
