Many TVs have a set of variable audio outputs; you can turn off the internal speakers and still use the TV's remote to control volume.i would like to connect speakers to my tv also, but don't wanna deal with a soundbar with a separate remote for the audio. if you get this working, lmk
IIRC, Logitech Z-5500s are thhe only speakers that can handle digital optical out of the box.
This baby will convert the signal for you.

Its stereo only though. Ones that do 5.1 seem to be quite a bit more expensive, and it makes more sense just getting an AV receiver at that point.

EDIT: I also believe that most soundbars don't have their own remote. I think they "learn" the volume commands from your existing remote. Then you just disable the internal speakers.
Nope, its impossible. Not without a DAC anyway. Optical is just that, a light beam that a device sees and decodes as digital information. PC speakers use analogue electrical signals. IIRC, Logitech Z-5500s are thhe only speakers that can handle digital optical out of the box.
