what kind of speakers? Unless you have something that actually accepts digital in, chances are you cannot do that.

i would like to connect speakers to my tv also, but don't wanna deal with a soundbar with a separate remote for the audio. if you get this working, lmk

Nope, its impossible. Not without a DAC anyway. Optical is just that, a light beam that a device sees and decodes as digital information. PC speakers use analogue electrical signals. IIRC, Logitech Z-5500s are thhe only speakers that can handle digital optical out of the box.

This baby will convert the signal for you.

Its stereo only though. Ones that do 5.1 seem to be quite a bit more expensive, and it makes more sense just getting an AV receiver at that point.

Many TVs have a set of variable audio outputs; you can turn off the internal speakers and still use the TV's remote to control volume.

EDIT: I also believe that most soundbars don't have their own remote. I think they "learn" the volume commands from your existing remote. Then you just disable the internal speakers.

My Logitech Z5450s do it as well ;). In fact, they're hooked up to this very PC using a TOSLINK cable.

Plus most TVs with an optical out only output 2 channel anyway. (It will output 5.1 from TV channels, but not if you hook a 5.1 source to it via HDMI such as a Bluray player, it will just output 2.0) :(

the vizio hd sound bar has a master volume that can be controlled with a remote that is included.

Thanks. I actually bought a Vizio HD sound bar today, that i can connect using an optical cable, since the soundbar has an optical input. Just waiting for the cable i ordered online to get here to try it out. I'll let you all know how it works out then.

audio out on tv's is 2 channel stereo remember.

can't break the hdmi rule of passing 7.1 through the tv to an unencrypted toslink signal.

The soundbar is 2.0 anyway so this is a moot point. On the other hand, most soundbars are actually in-line HDMI wise, so source-->soundbar-->TV.
