Connecting new DSL modem

Hi: I have the following issue. I'm changing providers and got TP-link TD-8616 adsl modem.
W7 Ult x64

Its address is: 192.168.1.1
My current provider's modem is on 192.168.2.1
My current router is 162.168.1.1 linksys e4200

I tried unplugging router and connecting the 8616. I type 192.168.1.1 and i can access 8616, but only for a minute or so. Shortly after the webpage gives me 404 and I can't access it anymore before unplugging power and retrying.

I wanted to change the 816 to 168.2.1 instead of 1.1 so it doesn't conflict with the router but it doesn't seem to be able to force 2.1 instead of 1.1 in the 816 setup. I click apply 2.1 address change and it gives me 404 page not found again...

I haven't rebooted the pc though.. I tried ipconfig / flushdns and the ipconfig /renew with 8616 connected. flushdns was successful but renew just hangs there with cursor blinking and doesn't do anything....

What is the proper procedure?

Thanks!

If it can't sustain a web interface I'd ask for a replacement. That assumes your computer and the cable are good, so I'd double check it by logging into the router. The router doesn't have to really be connected to anything. Just amke sure you don't have any issues with the ethernet cable etc.

Reset the modem to factory defaults and leave it at 192.168.1.1, change the IP of the router to whatever you want?
Or like the above person said, get a new modem from the ISP.
