Connecting my satellite/cable top box to my pc for digital sound

Hi,

I was wondering if it's possible to connect my satellite or cable top box with digital out to my computer. So, I can get 5.1 surround sound?

Is it possible? If so, how? Do I need special sound card with digital in? Can I do it through the SPDIF (what is this exactly)

I don't want to buy a receiver and speakers yet. I want to use my 5.1 computer speakers instead.

Maybe you can just connect your cable box directly to the 5.1 speaker system.
