After reading some posts, how tos, etc. I attempted to connect a newly purchased Laptop (Sony AMD k62550 w/ME)to my Desktop (Abit Vt6x MB w/98se).
I installed a Netgear 10/100 PC card into the laptop and a 10/100 32 bit pci network card to the desktop connecting both directly to each other with a supplied cable 5 utp cable. My understanding is with only 2 computers I don't need a hub but can directly connect them as I have done.
I can get the computers under entire network to see only themselves and cannot get them to connect or see each other. I tried swapping to another 10/100 card on the desktop but the results were the same.
I gave the computers separate names, same workgroup name. Installed supplied drivers, updated them, added netbui after reading that might help with no luck. Device mgr shows both cards installed properly. As I have never tried any type of networking setup before is there something basic, stupid and obvious that I might be overlooking here? Thanks for any help.
I think I found the answer. With a hub I can use the supplied cat 5 utp cable to connect the 2 computers, but without the hub I have to make or hopefully purchase somewhere the same type cable but crossed over at one end.
