Connecting LANs together

So I have this LAN with my friends. It started with just my two computers and a 5-port Linxsys 10/100 auto-sensing hub, but has since grown to eight users and the addition of a similar 8-port hub. Now some guys upstairs want to build their own network and patch it into mine. Trouble is, according to the manuals for both hubs, only two hubs can be linked together, and the uplink cable cannot exceed 5 meters. I take that back. The 5-port hub can uplink on a 100-meter cable as long as we all use 100baseTX cards, which we do, but that limits us to 4 users.
I suppose I'll need to invest in a switch or repeater, but I don't know anything about either of those. Any info on the possible solutions?
