Connecting directly without using router

I have a 4 PC (2 desktops + 2 notebooks) connected to a wireless Linksys gateway (WAG54G)and in order to do some updating, I have to connect to the internet directly as the sole PC and basically bypass the router part. So I have to connect to the internet only through the modem part of the gateway part and bypass the router part of the gateway. Anyone have any ideas (if your head has not exploded already) ? :p

Why do you need to connect directly to the modem to update the PC? I have never seen a program of any kind (OS/app/game/etc.) that would not update normally from behind a router.

Yea - something doesn't make sense. That gateway should be sufficient and would allow all 4 of your computers to connect to the internet. Do you have this particular gateway setup correctly? Meaning, did you set it to obtain an ip address automatically or is your ISP providing you a static address? From there, you will then have to setup your LAN and define your DHCP scope (assuming you don't want your PCs to have static addresses).

I have seen where nat has issues with some programs, but it's configuration issues. The point of a router is to route traffic. IP is routed, so if you are doing IP stuff, you have to be able to route it. The internet would not work if we all "Had to connect directly.

More details of what you really are trying to do would help us fix the real issues.

quick and very dirty: place your comp in a DMZ. Be prepared to get owned if it is not totally patched up to date.

That's an awfull test to try, but it would work and you would get owned! I would definitly try DHCP first.

If it is patched and secured, it won't get owned. The lazy man's way when he has no clue what port/range to forward:)

WTH is a DMZ? Sorry but a complete newbie to networking :p

As for the other queries, imagine a line from the adsl port to the modem and then from the modem to the router and then to the PC. I have a gateway instead of a router and modem and want to the connect the PC to the gateway in such a way that it acts as if it is the only PC connected to the modem.

Sounds like you want DMZ? Still unclear. Why won't it update behind a router? Does it distribute patches via bittorrent like WoW?

COH updates just fine on my computer behind my router with no external ports open at all...
