My roommate has an HP ze5170 laptop here that has an s-video out on the back.. we want to be able to watch DVD's on the main TV, how do I connect them?

Do I only need an s-video cable, and then plug it in, or do I need to change settings and stuff? He said he had tried to do it last year, and it wouldnt work for some reason, it was giving him an error.. so im asking so I know how to work it before i go drop money on an s-video cable

You need:

S-Video cable from the laptop to the TV (This is for the video).

RCA Audio cables for the audio. If the laptop doesnt have an RCA audio out (which it probably doesnt), you will need a Stereo -> RCA adapter.

Remember that some programs won't let you do that for copyright reasons.

Depending on the video chip you will need to drop your screen res to 640x480 and fiddle around with the video setting for nview/hydravision/whatever

If you want sound to come from the TV you will need and audio cable too.
