Connecting computer to LCD HDTV -- a few questions

Hi all,
Just hooked up my computer to my new 42" LCD TV which supports 1080p. OK so I used a DVi-HDMI cable and all is well. My Nvidia drivers have no issueu allowing my 8800GTX to show everything as it were on my older PC Monitor.

Now I want to play HD movies -- my whole point of connecting the comp to my TV. Is this as simple as opening up my windows media player classic and launching an HD movie and then maximizing? Or must I be running a special movie player like power DVD or something.

I am sorry for the stupid questions.. I guess the reason is that I tried playing some movies that were rips from a few new HD movies my friend bought (all around 9 GIG) and honestly they don't look any better than what my normal store bought non HD movies look on my tv.

Do I need special codecs or are the ones that came with the K-lite pack good enough?

Does the movie have to be encoded differently? Or do I need to specify somewhere with the app I am using to view the movie to play at 1900x1200 or whatever 1080p is?

Many THanks

1080p is, correct me 1920x1080. Your playing software should maximize your video to that resolution if possible. But i dont know if that resolution is supported anywhere. Try to put your desktop to 1920x1080 and maximize the media player then. Its the preferred resolution for that TV anyway for the clearest picture.

I have tried to connect my PC to a TV too, my parents wanted to see what HD is about lol. And the resolution of 1366x768 ,which the TV has, was not possible to do. I dont know anymore if even the 720p was possible. I could only get somewhere close.
