Connecting computer audio to stereo

I used to run my computer audio through my old receiver using a y-cable plugged into the Tape "in" RCA jacks on my stereo and everything worked fine.

THe receiver finally died and so I replaced it with a fancy surround sound thing thats giving me fits.

The only time I get sound from the computer to the stereo speakers is when I use the Realtek HD Audio Manager software to check the system settings. When I test my setup it produces a sound. But if I try to play a CD or anything on the internet, no sound is produced. Nothing from the headphones either.

Any ideas?

Are you still hooked up via analog?

I just played around with my Realtek HD Audio Manager (ASUS version) to see if I could come up with a combination of muting things on the mixer so that the 3D audio demo would produce sound but nothing else. I was unable to find a setting that produced that effect. Maybe your software is different though... Is everything turned on (vs. mute) on the mixer settings?

like yoyo said, you need to check the mutes on your mixer. what are you connecting to the receiver with? if it is digital it should auto sense that it is getting regular audio and not some sort of dolby or something, but you may want to check the settings on the receiver also. can you set the receiver to 2 channel mode and test it?

Vista (I assume) kicked my audio dead twice.

The second time was the media center update ...

I never found the conflict and returned to a previous restore point to get my audio back. This rig has a Fusion5-lite tuner card, nVidia vid card, nForce 6150/430 chipset and Realtek 662. I suspect it was the tuner card (it has its issues with Vista) but never found a workaround.

I can't recall what I did the first time I lost the audio in this box but I deleted all the audio drivers and did a reinstall with the latest Realtek package from their website and all was good.

As noted are you still analog? Since the Radeon HD 3450 cards support audio over HDMI if you switched to digital optical or coax you may have to enter device manager and resolve a driver conflict.

Enter audio properties and select desired playback device. If your desired device is not there then in the device manager disable the HD audio device and reinstall your onboard audio driver. Here are the Realtek drivers (note they recommend using your OEM-supplied drivers).

Since the HD3450 has its own audio if you are using the onboard sound be sure to disable the vid card audio.

There are no mutes applied on any devices. I'm not sure if I understand what you mean when you ask if I'm still hooked up via analog. In real terms yes, I have a Y-cable where one end is R/L RCA connections and the other end is a single headphone-like thing that plugs into the MB. Logically speaking I'm not sure how to configure any settings to say the output is analog.

I'm starting to think this may be windows-related though I have no way of proving that. I plugged my old stereo back in and lo and behold, same behavior, the HD audio manager testing produces a sound, but no other source (DVD drive, internet) produces anything and the headphone output is silent.

*Frustrated* :

Make sure the default audio device in WINDOWS sound properties is selected to be your audio card. The Internet sound is controller via this setting. Individual applications can use other devices if they have that option in their settings. For instance foobar2000 can output over one audio connection and WMP over another if you configure foobar that way.

In the realtek settings, what do you have the speaker setup as? It should be 2 speaker stereo if you have a stereo 1/8th cable converted to red and white RCA.
