I'm trying to connect my ASUS ThundeboltEX 3-TR to my ASUS Z97-A motherboard. I plugged it into the PCIE 3.0/2.0 x16_2 slot (see manual). I plugged the AIC into a USB header with the included header, and I plugged it into power from my PSU.

The only problem I have is that the AIC includes a 14-1 cable which plugs into a 14-1 pin thunderbolt header (TB_HEADER). My motherboard has a 5 pin thunderbolt header. I skipped the cable for now since I had no way to plug it in. I booted up Windows, installed the drivers and connected the included cables from my dedicated graphics card to the thunderbolt AIC to enable video passthrough. I have a CalDigit TS3 Plus dock connected via thunderbolt and monitors connected to the dock. Video output worked great (I was able to get 1x1440p @ 144hz + 1x1440p @ 60hz). The only problem is that any USB adapters or aux speakers connected to my dock don't work.

I'm not able to see any settings related to thunderbolt in my BIOS, but from the research I've done it seems like some options should be present. I've read about shorting pins on the motherboard to trick it into thinking a proper AIC is connected, but I can't find instructions on doing it in my particular situation.

So -- does anyone have experience with this particular setup? Is there some way I can connect my 14-1 pin cable to a 5 pin header? Can I short the cable/header somehow to get the AIC to work properly?

I've purchased a ThunderboltEX 3 (which has a 5 pin cable) as a backup, but I'd like to get the card I have working.

Hey, I got the exact same situation as you, I got the same mb and I'm wondering if you had any info on whether or not a 14-1 pin to 5 pin cable would do the job.
