Connecting an CP-2w Access Point to a Linksys Router

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 v.2 Router and I recently purchased a Compaq CP-2W. What I am trying to do is use the CP-2w as an access point in another room. Do I use a normal network cable to connect the Linksys to the CP-2w or do I use a Cross-over cable? I have set the the CP-2w as an access point and changed the ip from 192.168.1.2 and the Linksys is at 192.168.1.1. I've tried both the normal networking wire and the cross over but I can't seem to get the access point to work. Thanks for reading this.
