Connecting a switch to a router?

Hi all,
I need to connect a Dlink Gigabit 8 port switch to my Dlink 655 wireless router. I have connected computers before directly to the Dlink 655 router using regular "patch cables" -- not cross over. Same goes to the switch. But what cable to I need to connect the switch to the router? Cross over? or does a regular patch cable/straight work for this and if so does the DIR 655 support this feature? I am not even sure if it is supposed to have as special uplink port or not.

Thanks!

In the olden days, before auto-MDX, you would need to use a crossover cable to connect two switches together (and, yes, this is what you are doing). Some manufacturers would put an "uplink" port on their hub or switch, and this was basically a port that was wired in crossover fashion, so that you could connect it to another switch with a patch cable, rather than a crossover cable.

This is largely not needed anymore with auto-sensing switch ports that will operate in either a regular or uplink mode, adjusting to whatever device you are connecting and whatever cable you are using to connect the two.

A question from the peanut-gallery:

Other than fiber-optic internet subscriptions, how close is existing cable and DSL technology to making a gigabit WAN connection useful?
