We have a small HP Compaq dx2300 PC that I have connected to a Philips 720p/1080i LCD (native res. of 1366x768). I'm using the VGA input right now, as the dx2300 only has built-in video. The LCD also has two HDMI inputs.

The problem is that the LCD accepts a maximum resolution of 1024x768 on the VGA input, which sucks too much.

I already have a DVI>HDMI cable, so I was thinking on getting a cheap PCIe graphics card (maybe a 7200GS) in order to use the HDMI and have a native res. of 1366x768.

Would that work ok? Will I get the native panel resolution or something like 1280x720?

It should very likely work. I use a 7900GS via DVI -> HDMI to Sharp 52D62U (1080P)

What are the intended uses?

Great! thanks! I'll see if I can get a 3450. I don't need gaming performance, just basic office stuff (PowerPoint presentations and the ocasional video clip).

Washoe, you gan get high quality HDMI to DVI cables on Amazon for about $5 a piece. The seller is called BargainCell.

I just tested the LCD with my MacBook via HDMI and it works beautifully. OS X detected it as PhilipsTV with a res. of 1360x768 (only lost 6 pixels). I just wish Windows would work the same way...

$70 for a 3450?!

Is the heatsink diamond encrusted or are you building the card yourself?

Oh oh... I just checked HP's website and the card that they sell (that costs twice as much) is a low-profile PCI card. The one I ordered is a standard height card, but after looking at thetech manual (page 10) it looks like it will take a regular card as well. Am I correct?

You actually lost 6 * 768 = 4608 pixels, but who's counting ;)
