Good day everybody. :)

I'm interested in connecting my notebook to my PC at work and at home, but I have no idea how to do that. Hence, I need your help. :p

My notebook comes with a built-in modem and a 10/100Mbps LAN. I want to know how can I form a network at home for the notebook and my PC, so that I can sychonize files between the desktop PC and the notebook. What do I need to setup the connection for networking? And how do I do that?

In addition, my office PC is already connected to a LAN. Hence, I would like to hook up my notebook to it, so that I can use my notebook to do some of my office works, also to be able to use the company's lease line to surf the Internet on my notebook. I would like to know how can I do this too. :)

Thank you for your attention and help. ;)

An answer to all your questions, means Very, Very Long write up.

I will skip the Work situation, since it very hard to explain what to do with an existing system if you are not knowledgeable about the system.

At home:

You have to open your computer, and install a Network Card (NIC). You can find 10/100 NIC in any Computer store, or on the Internet.

Desktop - You have to load the drivers that came with the card (follow the card?s instruction manual)

Laptop - You have to load the drivers that came with the Laptop card for the Laptop?s NIC (follow the Laptop?s instruction manual).

The simplest way to connect two computers with NICs is to use a CrossOver CAT5 Network Cable. (Important the cable has to be Crossover).

Instruction for configuring the Network you can find here:

Thanks JackMDS for your reply. :) I would try to connect the noetbook to my home PC to see if it works. ;)

By the way, I would like to know with a 10/100Mbps LAN card in my notebook, does it mean that my notebook is ready for any network connection?

Another question is, what will happen if two systems (notebook and office PC) are using two different OS? For example, the office PC is running Windows NT, while the notebook is running Windows ME? Can both be connected?

If your Laptop has a 10/100 card in it, and the Card drivers are installed, and Win98ME network protocols are installed and configured correctly, then your Laptop is Network ready.

Yes, Win98ME and WinNT can communicate on a Network.

The Network parameter at home probably will not be the same as the one at work. There are few solutions to such situation, but it is not so simple.

You can end up in troubles with the network guys. Make sure that someone that knows the Network at work is helping you.

Good Night.
