Connecting a NIC to the uplink port on a switch

I had 2 PC's networked NIC to NIC with a crossover cable which
goes through the atic.
Now I have installed a switch, and I still want to use the crossover cable. Can I connect it to the UPLINK port ?
Is it allowed to connect the UPLINK to a NIC ?
