connecting 3 HDDs in my 2 ide ports... i did it, now problems, HELP!!!, UPDATE: found the issue

I have 2 IDE ports in my motherboard.

I have had 2 HDDs in the 1st IDE channel and 1 DVDRW in the second IDE channel.

I want to add 1 more HDD in the second channel (thus the 2nd channel will have HDD and DVDRW).

I have the following questions:

1. Will this HDD work only in "ultra dma mode 2". The other 2 HDDs in IDE1 work currently in "mode 5", but since the DVDRW works in "mode 2", will the speed of this HDD also get reduced?

2. Will this affect/damage the HDD in any way, or is it just a decreased speed.

Thanks.

EDIT:

now connected like this:

IDE 1:
master: maxtor 100gig (udma 2)
slave: wd 160gig (udma2)

IDE2:
master: dvdrw 16x (udma 4)
slave: seagate 80gig (udma 5)

my hdd on 2nd channel comes up in udma 5, however the 2 HDDs on the primary are now on mode 2.

help, what did i do wrong? thanks.

found the problem. my machine had the 28AWG cable for the ide1. so it limited to udma2. i replaced that with 30AWG cable and now it runs at udma5.

IDE 1:
master: maxtor 100gig (udma 5)
slave: wd 160gig (udma 5)

IDE2:
master: dvdrw 16x (udma 4)
slave: seagate 80gig (udma 5)

thanks.

it should decrease the speed without doing any harm to the data. make sure you do not try to burn something from that hard drive to the DVD burner

hmm I was always told it would if they are on the same cable... either way nothing will be damaged. Try it out and see... all you need to do to see is plug it in and go to the device manager and check the properties for that HD

ok, thanks. as long as it causes no [permanent] damage to the HDD, i'm in. 🙂 i am ok with the low speed as well.
